Afternoon delight

Have a guess what this is? A map of the world maybe? Weird blue alien-like image? No idea? It’s a digital representation, ‘internet’ mapping [if you will] of Facebook users connecting with eachother all over the globe. And there is no map behind it! How wild is that! This image was created in 2010 and shows the power of people connecting sharing gossip, pictures, status updates.. It really blew my mind!

I spent my afternoon with co workers at an event hosted by Paula Rogers discussing (copy + pasted from the invite) The future technology of handheld devices and how the NBN will affect their development. But also just a general chat about online retailers and the power of the digital phenomenon.

We skyped with one of the original co founders of Shopbop.com Alle Fister all the way over in LA (side note – she was wearing a neon yellow sweater which did consume my thoughts for a number of minutes) Elle Pearson – Director of Strategy & Brand Development, Chris Wood – Managing Director of Customer Experience  & Emerging Channels at Telstra Digital, Darren Rudd – Lead Community Manager from NBN and Dean Kelly – the Managing Director of our sister company Zanui.com.au.

Highlights? The girls from IMG and myself really captured the essence of what we do in Social Media. We were tweeting at eachother throughout the meeting having never met and sitting 2 tables away. Loved it! One of the very aspirational talks came from Elle, IMG. She is the ex Global Production Director of Burberry in the UK. If you are a Social Media whizz then you will know the enormous scale of the Burberry precence in Social Media. It is fact that they are the leading Fashion Brand in the world having over 13 million Facebook Fans. She handled the content creation & creative media for all online channels, um.. wow. She introduced us to the term “Double Screening” (I am guilty of this) where you are interacting with 2 different devices at the same time; for example sitting in front of the TV but also interacting on the internet or your iPad/ smart phone. She started out as an intern at Fashion Week 12 years ago and is now a leader in the industry. #amazing.

Another interesting speaker was Chris Wood from Telstra. Learning about the trends in society and how we interact with the different devices and Social Media.  ”The consumer has changed. community is the new expert.” An in depth discussion about how their company is changing to fit in line with our societys huge connection to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube… the list goes on! We are the Millennial Consumer.

It was a good end to the day meeting the guys from Melbourne based menswear label nANA jUDY. Glenn and Jarrod are 2 top notch dudes running the show and soon to be a part of THE ICONIC!
